Offshore online poker rooms might be tempted to establish a UK presence by applying for a UK gaming license thanks to UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown. Brown introduced a plan to entice these companies by not requiring them to relocate to the UK and be subject to the British Value Added Tax (VAT), which could make it cost prohibitive to do so. It seems the US of A is not the only country at war with online poker these days as France butts heads with poker industry types - some say in a more oppressive manner than the US. Bwin executives were arrested in Monte Carlo, then the European Poker Tour event set in Deauville was shut down, and now the French authorities want “to talk” to John Anderson, the former head of Pacific Poker, regarding online poker in the country. Wait, isn’t that backwards? The original line, often quoted by football coaches and armchair generals is, “the best defense is a good offense.” That’s true, at least in football and war, but poker is neither. Unlike coaching a football game or planning a military offensive, poker is personal, eye to eye, and sometimes the rules don’t mean a thing.
