CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Only nine players will compete for the top prize of just over $8 million at the World Series of Poker’s final table Tuesday afternoon but plenty of other folks — from casino operators to chocolate makers — will cash in as well as America’s fascination with the game remains high.

Today, July 15th, is Day 6 of the 38th annual World Series of Poker’s Main Event. There will be two more days before it is all over, but tomorrow is a day off to give the lucky final table players 24 hours to rest, recoup, reconnoiter and restore before playing for over $8 million.

2007 WSOP Diary: Day 44, July 14th

As the day went on players continued to disappear as if play was happening in the middle of the Bermuda triangle or Jeffrey Dahmer was in the room with a Hibachi and a big appetite. At this point in time, most of the sport’s stars that we associate with something as monumental as the WSOP Main Event are hanging out at the bar, watching the action at the tables and trying out lines on cocktail waitresses.

You make bets in Holdem to win the pot, but you win the pot by betting for control. The equity you generate in a pot is like your shares in a business. The more shares you have in a business, the more control you have of that business. The more equity you have in a pot, the more control you have over that pot.
