At the University of South Dakota in Vermillion a group of students are learning about “Poker and the Meaning of Life”, the name of their First Year Experience Class, and one lesson will be about giving. Professor Doug Peterson and his class are putting on a poker tournament for charity to benefit SESDAC, a Vermillion organization that helps disabled individuals in the area. The class will handle fundraising, publicity and the tournament itself, learning about organization, planning and teamwork along the way…

One of the more interesting parts of the hit poker show on NBC, Poker After Dark, is the chance to watch poker players in their “natural habitat.” The show pulls six players, at a cost of $20k of their own money each, into a No Limit Holdem game where the winner takes all. The camera shows all the hands, and there is no creative editing.

Taking a page from the US Government playbook, Norway is the next in a line of European countries striking a blow against online poker and online gambling. Norway’s financial institutions will be held responsible for reporting and tracking transactions related to online gambling, much in the same way the UIGEA legislation works in the United States. Not all European nations are taking such a stance, however - for instance Norway’s neighbor Sweden has instead regulated online gambling, although their government monopoly is taking some hits from the European Union on the matter…

The internet has, without a doubt, been hugely responsible for the popularity and profitability of poker around the world. An entire industry has cropped up to support poker online, and all the ancillary benefits of poker plus the internet have come along with it. Sometimes, however, such good things can be abused, as has been seen recently with the poker scandals surrounding some online poker rooms.

There are plenty of fun poker names for starting hands in Texas Holdem. Big Slick (ace king), Fishhooks (two Jacks), Pocket Rockets (two Aces) and the like; one poker hand had to do without a name for a long time, not only because there was no real name that came to mind for seven two, but because it was the worst starting hand in the game.

Poker is a game of changing fortunes, both in the sense of luck and in the sense of wealth. Your luck will change over the course of the game, going from bad to good or vice versa. Your wealth will change as well. Hopefully, your pile will grow, but in some cases, it will shrink. Controlling your changing fortunes, then, is a matter of controlling the flow of your chips, because you cannot control your fortune.

For the fourth year in a row the folks from the World Series of Poker will be arriving in New Orleans for another Circuit event to take place at the Harrah’s New Orleans casino. The event will take place from November 26 through December 5, and at least one player will be coming a long way in order to participate.
