New IRS Regulations for Poker Tournaments

Published by webmaster under Blog Posts

Usually when the words “new regulations” come out the offices of the Internal Revenue Service most of the population should prepare for something that will feel remarkably like a prostate exam. Those who enjoy the sport of tournament poker had better get ready for the IRS to make them very uncomfortable in the coming year. Starting on March 4, 2008 the IRS is implementing a new requirement for reporting poker tournament winnings.”In the past, sponsors and players have been confused over whether sponsors who hold the money for players are required to report the winnings and/or withhold taxes on the winnings,” said Mark Walstrom, an Enrolled Agent and Licensed Taxpayer Representative from JK Harris & Company, the nation’s largest tax resolution firm. The new regulations mandate that all tournament sponsors report tournament winnings of $5000 or more…

USC and UCLA Continue Rivalry Over a Game of Poker

Published by webmaster under Blog Posts

Usually when the USC and UCLA talk about meeting in some sort of competitive endeavor, usually it involves 22 heavily armored students chasing a ball from one end of a 100 yard field to the other and doing the sorts of things to each other that would qualify as textbook assault if done off the field. In this particular case we are not talking about a football game, but rather the two schools continuing their rivalry over a poker table. The Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) will continue its schedule of inter-school matches this weekend with a team poker competition between USC and UCLA. This is part of a larger initiative that leads up to a national inter-school poker tournament in March of 2008.USC and UCLA will shuffle and play for the pride of their respective schools on Friday, November 30th at 1:00pm…

Over One Billion Served

Published by webmaster under Blog Posts

Usually when people think of a business that has successfully served one billion units, what immediately comes to mind is a clown who serves burgers that taste like masking tape. Rarely is an online poker room part of that discussion. Despite this, Bodog reached an important milestone on Sunday, November 25th…

Poker Player Is Voted Off the Island

Published by webmaster under Blog Posts

When most poker players think of a survival task, it involves wondering how they will get by while waiting for the empty plate of hot wings to be replenished. This isn’t just poker players, most people in America and Europe are not equipped to deal with any hardship bigger than forgetting where the nearest Panera bread store is when the urge for a Mocha Latte hits.

The Brave Poker Bankroll

Published by webmaster under Blog Posts

The poker tournament has only been going for a few hands and you flop top pair with a weak kicker. You are the last to act and it gets checked to you, so you bet half the pot and get one caller. The turn is no help, so you bet about half the pot again, and again get called. The river isn’t doing anything for you, and you still only have a top pair. You bet half the pot again and then wait, heart thumping in your chest, waiting for the other player to push you all in, signifying that he has you beat all along.

Side Stepping a Bluffer’s Trap

Published by webmaster under Blog Posts

Lying is a part of life. Anybody who has ever needed to mainline Pepto Bismol after choking down a lethal pot roast, cooked by a surly mother-in-law knows that the truth would have been more painful and long lasting than the ensuing food poisoning. Those who play poker in a serious manner know that the only way to succeed at the game is to be a highly skilled liar - of course we just call it bluffing.

WSOP Owner Harrah’s Gets Rejected

Published by webmaster under WSOP

Harrah’s Entertainment, currently owners of the World Series of Poker brand and franchise, put in a bid for 28 percent of UK based land and online gambling group Rank Plc, but were turned down. The offer, which would have exchanged Harrah’s UK casino holdings for the chunk of ownership, was rejected despite Rank’s shares having taken a hit when gaming machine removal and smoking bans have hurt their business in the United Kingdom. In fact last month Rank put out a profits warning to their share holders that was at a seven year low, covering their major gaming brands Grosvenor Casinos and Blue Square.Related Articles:WSOP voted a top sport in USADates up for 2008 World Series of Poker…
