Stem cell research is a touchy and controversial topic, so it is with a certain touch of irony that the Aspen Group chose to raise money for stem cell treatment via poker, a much maligned game. Two events designed to raise money for stem cell treatment for three women with spinal injuries were organized to be played in Jimmy’s restaurant in Aspen. A recent press release details the upcoming Poker Celebrity Bowl 2008, an event to take place at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. Special guests will be on hand to play poker and press the flesh, such as World Series of Poker bracelet winner Robert Williamson III, Sex and the City’s Willie Garson and Red Sox World Series Champion Royce Clayton. YouTube has been a boon to everyone with a video camera and way too much time on their hands. Since it was first launched it has gone from showing videos of the band “Rednex” singing their only hit “Cotton Eyed Joe”, to airing the tearful pleas to leave Britney Spears alone, while finally realizing its crowning moment when a YouTube snowman got to question American Presidential candidates. So why wouldn’t the poker industry want a piece of this action?

Lions don’t play poker (a pretty good argument could be made that they don’t play football either), but if they did, their experience out on the Savannah gives them a bit of strategic edge. You will never see a lion attacking a group of angry water buffalo, the cat will more then likely isolate the weakest one, and go in for the kill, preferably bringing a number of friends along to finish off the delicious yet dangerous beast.

Let’s face it, when you’re playing poker, you’re in the business of misery. You’re not causing cheer and joy. You’re causing anger and suffering. Hopefully, your opponents and you can leave these feelings at the table, but when it all comes down to it, everyone sitting at that table is out to cause misery with everyone else at that table. It’s the nature of the game.
