Men “The Master” Nguyen doesn’t often have to wonder who the boss is when he sits down at a poker table. Unless he is playing against Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, or Johnny Chan, there are not that many folks who can pull rank on Men. Until yesterday that would have been true within comfy confines of his home as well, but on March 5th Van Nguyen, Men’s wife, became the first woman to win a major, televised World Poker Tour tournament. The staggering implications this has for exactly how even the playing field is in regards to gender equality in poker are dwarfed by implications this has regarding how now Van has a piece of hardware that her husband can’t match.

Draw poker allows you to control when you get your outs and, to some extent, how your hand develops from that. You can choose what cards to drop from your hand and when. You can also choose how many new cards to get, either one or two. There’s another side to this that can be a useful part of any poker player’s strategy when playing draw poker. Every time you draw a new card, you remove a card from the deck. Generally, you are doing this to add that card to your hand, but there’s another reason why you can do this.

In the movie “Revenge of the Sith”, Obi-Wan Kenobi makes the statement that only a Sith deals in absolutes. Apparently Mr. Kenobi missed the fact that his own statement is an absolute and qualifies him for a black robe and red light saber. This of course doesn’t change the fact that absolutes really don’t work when it comes to complex subjects such as poker. In more than one article and publication it has been noticed that the writer has used the word “never” when talking about slowplaying AA or KK hole cards before the flop.

While NBC’s Poker After Dark had some new faces in their 3rd season, including new hostess Marianela Pereyra, some “old” faces were on hand and continued to play the same way.
