Tournament Strategy: Poker Etiquette
Although proper tournament etiquette when playing live Poker may not seem to be an important part of tournament strategy, etiquette violations frequently overlap with rules violations. Violating a rule could have you sitting out one or more rounds, which could be extremely detrimental when blinds are high. Here are some basic etiquette rules you need to know.
Poker Etiquette Rule 1: One Player to a Hand
If you are not involved in a hand, don’t say anything. You especially should not say anything to one of the players involved in the hand. In a tournament, the actions of each player affect everyone at the table. It is inappropriate for a player not involved in the decision to try to influence those actions.
Poker Etiquette Rule 2: Cards on the Table
In most casinos, if one of your cards goes off the table, you incur a penalty. This is true whether you meant the cards to go off the table or not. The rule is to avoid the throwing of cards by angry players, but it is applied universally to avoid disputes.
Poker Etiquette Rule 3: Language
Use of foul language at the table is discouraged. Although rules on this have relaxed somewhat of late, foul language can also incur a penalty, so try to avoid it whenever possible. If you are upset about losing a hand, your best bet is to walk away from the table to calm down. This will not only help you avoid a penalty, but help you cool off before getting into another hand in which you might make an emotional mistake.
When playing poker these etiquette rules are common decency and should be followed for greatest possible tournament experience.
