The sale of Harrah’s Entertainment - the owner of the World Series of Poker brand - is nearly complete, which begs the question of what will happen to the WSOP. The sale, which is to a couple of private equity firms, rings in the billions, so the firms taking over are certainly counting on the WSOP, along with the rest of the Harrah’s business, to bring in the money. Does this mean they will make big changes in the way the WSOP is going to be run? It does not look like it, as it has been announced that the Chairman and CEO of Harrah’s, Gary Loveman, will be retained, as will WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack.Related Articles:39th World Series of Poker starts with Championship eventJosh Arieh takes 2nd at WSOP Circuit event…

The traditional way to wrap up a season of the World Series of Poker is to play the $10,000 championship event, but this next season will be run a bit differently: they are going to start the season with a $10,000 championship event. They are still ending the WSOP with the Main Event, a $10,000 No Limit Holdem championship event, but they are planning on more than one. The first event will be a $10,000 Pot Limit championship event, and a few more events will have “championship” appended on them, all in different poker disciplines or special entry events, like the Seniors.Related Articles:Josh Arieh takes 2nd at WSOP Circuit eventDates up for 2008 World Series of Poker…

The company that owns and operates the World Series of Poker brand, Harrah’s Entertainment Inc, may soon be sold off to private investors, as the lights keep turning green on the game plan. Harrah’s Entertainment, currently owners of the World Series of Poker brand and franchise, put in a bid for 28 percent of UK based land and online gambling group Rank Plc, but were turned down. The offer, which would have exchanged Harrah’s UK casino holdings for the chunk of ownership, was rejected despite Rank’s shares having taken a hit when gaming machine removal and smoking bans have hurt their business in the United Kingdom. In fact last month Rank put out a profits warning to their share holders that was at a seven year low, covering their major gaming brands Grosvenor Casinos and Blue Square.Related Articles:WSOP voted a top sport in USADates up for 2008 World Series of Poker…

When the market research firm Turnkey Sports & Entertainment took a poll of North American sporting preferences, they may not have expected poker to rank so high. The poll of 12,000 sports fans showed that, despite what the purists may think about poker not being a sport, these fans certainly consider it one. While the top ten sports were what might be expected, such as the PGA, NASCAR, the NHL, NBA and Major League Baseball and NFL grabbed the top two spots, the World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light managed the 11th favorite spot.Related Articles:Poll shows opposition to US poker positionPoker pro goes to Washington…
